The North American P51 Mustang was the most successful American fighter plane of WW2. With fantastic performance at high and low altitude, coupled with it's agility and extended range it was able to escort Allied bombers all the way to their targets in Germany and back. This transformed casualty rates amongst B17 squadrons making USAAF daylight raids against Germany viable. The P51 also saw action as a fighter and in ground attack roles in all WW2 theatres, including the Pacific.
